Gareth Chua
Inspiring Youth Winner – 2021
Nominated by: –

Mr. Gareth Chua is a 22-year-old youth with autism, and one of eight YMCA Special Needs Ambassadors who are leading the YMCA Inclusive Challenge.

Mr. Gareth is currently attempting to climb 3,776m from Singapore to “virtually conquer Mt Fuji” in order to raise funds and awareness for YMCA Special Needs programmes in the process. When Mr. Gareth learnt that this challenge would raise funds for programmes that empower other youth with special needs, and raise awareness about special needs to the public, he enthusiastically agreed to take on the role.

His passion and determination shone through as he completed the challenge ahead of over 730 participants from the public. He went on hikes, and also climbed up and down his HDB buildings. He has since accumulated enough elevation to have summited Mt Everest thrice.

Mr. Gareth’s accomplishments have since been featured on local media and online websites, including Salt and Light. His story has inspired many members of the public and advocated through action for the capabilities of persons with special needs. His perseverance also served as great encouragement to his fellow ambassadors with special needs and reminded other persons with special needs in the public to pursue their dreams bravely.
